Thomas Donaldson letter to J.S. Clarkson regarding Keokuk on horseback, 1886.

Donaldson donated a copy of George Catlin's Keokuk on Horseback to the state of Iowa. This letter was written to accompany the gift and explains that the copy of the painting was made by George W. Nicholson of Philadelphia. Topics covered in the letter include other portraits in George Catlin's Gallery of American Indians; Keokuk, his family and fellow chiefs; and a history of the donated portrait.

Non-hereditary chief of the Sauk and Fox Indians who urged his people not to resist white advances. After the Black Hawk War in 1832, the U.S. appointed Keokuk chief of the Sauks and Foxes, gave him responsibility for administering a $20,000 annuity, and awarded his supporters 400 square miles of territory on the Iowa River in Iowa.
